Campo traveled to the scenic The Course at Wente for the first tournament of the year, finishing first among Diablo Athletic League teams, sixth overall in the 18-hole event. Junior phenom Baron Szeto made his season-debut in a big way, firing an even par 71 to finish in third place in the individual standings. Szeto was followed by freshman sensation Justin "J-Rod" Rodriguez with a 76. Junior John Lagomarsino carded a solid 78, followed by senior Jacob Ryerson with 84 and junior Austin Walker, with an 89 to round out the scoring.
One day later, Campo trounced rival Las Lomas at its home course, Boundary Oak in Walnut Creek by a resounding 191-211 score. The Cougars were led once again by a surging Szeto, who fired a four-under round, including a "chip-in" from 55 yards for eagle. Junior Joey Schmidt made his season debut a memorable one with a one over 37, his best 9-hole score in his career at Campo. Lagomarsino followed with a solid 2 over 38. Senior Ryan Brown fired a four-over 40, narrowly missing out on a great round, save for a bit of a bobble on the 9th hole. Ryerson and freshman Barrett Dellamar rounded out the scoring, both shooting 44. All in all, a great performance for the Cougars on the Knights' home turf.
With lots of moving parts and their top player Baron Szeto on the shelf for the first week of pre-season, the Cougars struggled against a terrific Castro Valley squad. On Tuesday, Campo kicked off the match-play season at Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro, Castro Valley's home course. Junior John Lagomarsino led the Cougars with a 3-over 39, followed by Seniors Jacob Ryerson and Lucas Nomura, who both carded solid 40s. Joe Marinai followed with a 42 and Freshman Justin Rodriguez posted a 43 in his Campo debut. Still, the Cougars lost to Castro Valley, 204 to an astonishing 186 for the home team.
On Thursday, Castro Valley traveled to Moraga Country Club, but again proved to be too tough for the Cougars. Lagomarsino once again posted a solid 39. He was followed by Marinai with a 40, narrowly missing an eagle putt on the par five 9th hole. Ryerson and freshman Barrett Dellamar both posted solid 42s, but Castro Valley once again proved to be too hot for the Cougars, winning the match by a final score of 198 to 209.
