Everything could have gone the other way for Campolindo’s senior class.

There could have not been a season. They never could have garnered the opportunity to play their final high school campaigns. Many players’ football careers would have ended outside of their control because of a pandemic.

Yet, the Cougars got it all. They withstood all adversity all their way.

And, today, they are champions, as the No. 11 Campolindo Cougars (5-0) secured a Diablo Foothill Athletic League title with a 38-28 victory over Las Lomas (1-3) on Friday evening in Moraga.

“It’s indescribable,” said Campolindo senior receiver/safety Maxwell Weaver. “We’ve grinded since the fall. It’s been months. We didn’t know if we were even going to be able to play, and to be able to play in a championship game means the world to me. We came out. We’re a brotherhood. We competed. We got the job done.”

Las Lomas took a 14-7 lead behind touchdowns from Frank Payne on a 1-yard run and an Emmanuel Karnley punt return score, but Campolindo seized control after that with some big drives.

Senior running back Dillan Thoms capped the first quarter with a 24-yard touchdown run to tie the contest at 14-14, which he then followed with a 5-yard run to put the Cougars ahead 21-14 with 2:55 remaining in the first half.

From there, it was all Campolindo, as its passing attack and defense came up with timely plays throughout the entire second half.
